To write clearly and concisely, use the verbs pressure, press or lobby instead of the wordy expression bring pressure to bear on (or upon).

  • Wordy: Sue’s family brought pressure to bear on her to host the party.
  • Concise: Sue’s family pressured her to host the party.
  • Wordy: Several women’s groups brought pressure to bear on MPs to support the bill.
  • Concise: Several women’s groups pressured (or pressed or lobbied) MPs to support the bill.
