On peut classer les sondages en «sondages à ciel ouvert» et «sondages forés». [...] Les sondages à ciel ouvert consistent à creuser une tranchée comprenant éventuellement des redans selon la profondeur à atteindre. C'est un mode de sondage excellent lorsqu'on peut le pratiquer, ce qui est malheureusement rare, car d'une part, il ne permet pas de descendre très bas dans le terrain, (à moins d'exécuter un puits), et d'autre part, il nécessite un grand volume de terrassements, et s'avère donc assez coûteux. Il permet pourtant une excellente reconnaissance du sol en place par examen des parois du sondage.
