En France, il désigne, selon les uns, l'«ensemble des activités sportives pratiquées sur l'eau, en particulier la navigation de plaisance» (Grand dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse, 1982, Vol. 7, p. 7296) ou est, selon les autres le «terme générique embrassant les sports de la nage et de la navigation, ainsi que les jeux sportifs qui s'y rattachent» (Le Robert des sports, 1982, p. 293).
